He taught at number of universities, including Cornell University, Yokohama National University, Keio University and Kyoto University before joining RIETI as President and CRO in 2016, and became Chairman in 2020. He was also Chair of Institute of Economic Research in Kyoto University from 2010 to 2012, and President of the Japanese Economic Association from 2008 to 2009. Research Director of Oxford Centre for Analysis of Resource Rich Economies. Formerly at Cambridge, LSE, European University Institute, Tilburg University, VU University and University of Amsterdam. Also former Member of Parliament and State Secretary in the Netherlands and former Member and Vice Chair of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Research interests macro and public finance with interests in climate economics and natural resources. Consultancy experience with EU, IMF, World Bank, ADB and AfDB. Presentation [PDF:3.1MB] Bio ONO Yuki joined Borderless Japan as a new graduate in 2018, aspiring to become a social entrepreneur who solves social problems through business. She is involved in developing services to improve the income of small-scale farmers in Myanmar and promoting an upcycled apparel business to create jobs for poor women in Guatemala. She learned about the urgent state of environmental issues through Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg and decided to devote her life to stopping global warming, so in April 2020 she launched Hachidori Electric Power, which sells only natural energy. She assumed the position of representative in July 2021 and now promotes the spread of renewable energy. Close Moderator Richard BALDWIN (Professor of International Economics, Graduate Institute, Geneva) Bio Richard Baldwin is a Professor of International Economics at the Graduate Institute in Geneva since 1991 and Editor-in-Chief of VoxEU.org since he founded it in 2007. Previously, he was President of CEPR in (2104-2018), a part-time Visiting Research Professor at the University of Oxford (2012-2015), Visiting Professor at the MIT Economics Department (Fall 2002-2003), and Associate Professor at Columbia Business School (1989-1991). He has served as a Managing Editor of Economic Policy (2000-2005). Before moving to Switzerland in 1991, he was a Senior Staff Economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisors in the Bush White House (1990-1991) following trade matters such as the Uruguay Round and NAFTA negotiations as well as numerous US-Japan trade conflicts. He has been an adviser and consultant to many international organizations and governments. He did his Ph.D. in Economics at MIT with Paul Krugman and has published a half dozen articles with him. Before that he earned an M.Sc. at LSE (1980-81), and a B.A. at UW-Madison (1976-1980). His most recent book is The Globotics Upheaval: Globalization, Robotics and the Future of Work, has been translated into Japanese. He is also a Faculty Fellow at Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry. He received a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University in 2000. He has been conducting research in the fields of international economics, development economics, and applied micro-econometrics. He recently focuses on the role of social and economic networks in economic growth and resilience, using firm- and household-level data from various countries. Using these data, he has published more than 60 academic papers in refereed journals, including Nature Sustainability, Research Policy, and World Development, and 4 books for non-academic audience in Japanese. In addition, he has served a number of policy-advising committees in the national and local governments of Japan.
